The Phantom of the Motherfucking Opera

Gai walked jauntily backstage, anxious and estatic over the upcoming preformance. He expected to be met with the smell of good luck roses and the even greater enthusiasm of the cast, but all he got was a wave of nervousness and what may have been the smell of vomit. Pre-show jitters, everyone gets them. Gai in particular felt jittery. He couldn't quite figure why he was more nerbous now than he was back when he performed in shows. He paced backstage, taking deep breaths. "It'll be fine, it'll be fine..." he repeated his mantra. Suddenly, a loud DUUUUUUN, DUN DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN rocked the school auditorium. "Oh my, here it is!" He ran to the left wing of the stage so he could control the curtain. He insisted on this job so he could get a good view of what was happening. He took a peek at the audience. It was a large crowd. He whispered to himself, "Let my opera begin."

Kurenai finished tying the last corset of a costume before tying her own. She then got into her place on the stage, broom in hand. Since Yuugao got dibs on playing the organ, Kurenai was stuck filling in secondary characters and getting the cast into costume. She had to admit, it was nerve-racking. She hadn't been on stage in years and it was in front of her own students. Hopefully this production wouldn't go wrong; she didn't want to hear it Monday morning.

For this first scene, Kurenai would play one of the maids who, in cleaning the opera house for their performance later that night, is unfortunate to listen to Carlotta "practice". Agh. She'll have to keep her vomit to herself then.

Neji took off his jacket as he entered the auditorium, looking around. Everyone was already seated in their positions and he merely shrugged, walking towards the side of the auditorium. He crossed his arms and leaned casually against the doors.

Apparently, the teachers were performing as well and that amused him greatly.

The lights dimmed down at this point of time and he could not make out anyone in the area. He also doubted that anyone would notice that he was there. He was too far from the stage for the cast to notice him; and the audience would not see him unless they turned around or left their seats.

Naruto took a breath and rolled his shoulders under the suit he wore. It was dark blue, a dark brown overcoat on it.

His first scene would be with the new owners of the theater, and Naruto was more than ready. All that practice...driving Sasuke nuts with his singing...

Naruto hesitantly touched his slicked down hair; he felt odd with it that way but Kurenai had insisted as it was the only way his hair seemed to obey. He heard the overture and took another breath.

This was it!

Hinata felt odd in the make-up she was wearing to help her appear older for her part, constantly touching the fake wrinkles and wig that were part of her costume. She felt really self-conscious, and also somewhat stupid. She hoped that she didn't bomb.

The only reason she was even still in the play was because both Sasuke and Kabuto-sensei felt it would be best for her, and Hinata was all about listening to the two of them. She just hoped they were right.

Shizune, as always, came running into the auditorium from some kind of errand that she was running for the school. Walking in, she noticed that she actually made it in time for a good seat. The stage was nicely clean and prepared for its occupants. The moment of truth was afoot. It was time for the students (and staff) of Konoha to show the true meaning of being a star.

Taking a seat, she couldn’t help but notice the person sitting next to her. “Why good evening. I heard lots of work had been put into the preparation for this show.”

While her character was an egotistic narcissist, Yukie herself only smiled at everyone backstage, even stopping to rub a few people on the shoulder. "No worries," she said. For once, she seemed like more than an actress who tossed the thought of friendship aside for a later tie; today, Yukie was once again on stage, and nothing could ruin her mood.

Well, almost nothing, at least.

She took her place, and as the curtains rose, she had to bite back a smile at the feel of the house lights on her. This was her time; Gai's time, everyones time, and nothing was going to ruin it.

Gai paced across backstage, frustrated as one could possibly be. "Where is Lee?! He's not even here and his part is up in ten minutes!" One who knew Gai could say they've seen the worst of his trademark freak-outs, but this blew them all in the water. He was turning a dark shade of red as he paced. Coupled with his standard green jumpsuit, he looked like he was ready for Christmas. "Why is he not HERE?! This is very unlike Lee..." Gai glaned at his watch. It would be about eight minutes before the Phantom is expected to begin singing. "Oh no... Oh NO!" Gai quickly clapped both of his hands to his mouth, but sound went unheard by the audience. Suddenly, Gai knew what he had to do. He ran to Kurenai and said, "Quick! Get me into the Phantom outfit! I'm filling in for Lee."

Kurenai was spraying the few stray hairs on her bun when Gai suddenly attacked her. "Ahhh! What?! Lee's not here?!" She couldn't believe it. The kid loved practice. Why would he not show up without notice? Okay, okay, don't panic Ku-chan. "Allright," she said. "But I'm not helping you into it! That's really creepy." She walked over to the rack of costumes and pulled out the Phantom's costume. "Here," Kurenai tossed it to her friend.

Gai gulped. "Uhh... that might be a little hard to move in." Gai shook his head, getting rid of the doubt. "But, I'll manage!" He snatched the costume then ran for the costume room. A couple of straggling extras stared wide eyed with disbelief. "Man, why are you here? This is the actor's changing spot." Gai glared at the ungrateful snot. Why did I let him in? Oh. Yes. Lack of males. The way the cookie crumbles, I guess. Gai eyed the kid, very annoyed. "Well, as of right now, I AM an actor. So, get out of here while I change." The kid narrowed his eyes. "Hey, we have to change in front of others. Why can't you?" Gai didn't have time for this, so he shouted, "BECAUSE I'M THE TEACHER AND I SAID GET OUT!" He pointed an unneccessary finger at the door, because the kid alrready ran out the door. Gai nodded triumphantly, then quickly got into costume and make-up, the old training kicking in. He took a glance at the mirror. Everything was in order except for one thing. The mask. It fit him surprisingly well. Immeadaitely, he stepped in character. Then he ran to stage right, nearly knocking Kurenai over. Finally he poised himself, ready to step out and start the next song. He cleared his throat a tiny bit before booming out, "Insolent boy, this slave of fashion. Basking in your glory! Ignorant fool, this brave young suitor. Sharing in my triumph!"

Gai hoped he sounded alright.

Tenten couldn't believe that the day had finally arrived.

She was in the dressing room, putting on the last piece of her costume before looking over to the small bag of makeup she had brought with her from her room. The light bounced off the shining metal at the bottom of it and she frowned. Thoughts about at least telling someone of the things she had found after some of the practices did cross her mind, but it was way too late now. Her hand dove into the bag, pulling out the object, she snuck it into her costume. She patted down the area and then pulled a portion of the costume up to conceal it. No turning back now.

She took one last glance in the mirror before making her way backstage. She looked around to make sure that the rest of the cast was alright and in place. Where was Lee? Her eye brow rose suddenly upon seeing Gai-sensei.

Gai-sensei!? What is he...is he taking Lee's place? There was no more time to think about it, so she took a deep breath. This was her moment, hopefully nothing terrible happened. Once the current started rising, she began to wonder if Neji was watching her. He said he would, right? I hope so.

"Tenten!" Naruto softly called and then grinned at her, waving enthusiastically. She didn't look too bad in her costume - although he was to loyal to Sakura to have ever said such a thing out loud.

He moved over to her, in an excitedly nervous fasion.

"You think we're ready?" he asked, blue eyes lit up.

Tenten gave him a cheerful grin. "Of course! We've all worked hard, so I don't see why this night can't be perfect," she answered trying to sound relaxed. "We'll all just do our best like always, right?"
